    ENFORCEMENT CHALLENGES OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
LAWS IN THE TELECOMMUNICATIONS INSTALLATIONS IN NIGERIA

    by
    ARIYOOSU, D A*
    &
    ALAJO, Y A**

    ABSTRACT

Following the boom in the global Telecommunications market as a result of the liberalization, privatization and technological advancement in the sector, there has been tremendous increase in the number of service providers as well as subscribers which necessitated the need for a corresponding increase in the installation of telecommunications facilities. In the process of installation of these facilities and their operations, certain environmental challenges ensue which tend to negate the principle of sustainable development. In order to address these challenges, certain attempts were made and some measures were put in place in terms of laws, regulations and practice. However, as superfluous as some of these laws are in the attempt to protect the environment against all sorts of environmental pollutions including ones resulting from telecommunications installations, some challenges have held back the enforcement of these laws and by extension; have put into question their effectiveness and efficiency. This paper, therefore, examines the various environmental impacts of telecommunications installations and the various challenges confronting the enforcement of the laws, regulations and practice put in place to prevent or minimize them.
